West Virginia isn't quite far enough north to benefit from the extreme cold winters experienced closer to the Canadian border, or high enough to counter milder winters this far south. However, as the only state to be entirely contained within a mountain range (and be dubbed 'mountain state' as a result), there's enough slip and slide here to warrant a day or two on the hill.
Of the downhill ski resorts in West Virginia, Snowshoe Mountain and Timberline have the steepest terrain and the biggest verticals at over 340 metres (1,000 feet) a piece.
You'll find snow tubing in all the resorts, and a decent terrain park at Winterplace resort.
Cross country is really where West Virginia comes into its own, and trails can be found at Canaan Valley, Timberline and Snowshoe. For die-hard fans however, the cross-country-only Elk River Touring Centre is probably the resort of choice. There are also plenty of backcountry skiing opportunities across West Virginia's state parks.
