The beautiful Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is well worth a visit. You can take a hiking trip following the Appalachian Trail, which runs for 100 miles through the entire park along the crest of the Blue Ridge mountains. You can also choose to explore underground - there are many caverns to visit in the state. The Shenandoah country vineyards in the Shenandoah valley are also a popular attraction.
Virginia has four alpine resorts. Massanutten offers skiing, boarding and tubing and features 14 trails and two terrain parks (one of which caters for novices). It also boasts the highest vertical drop in the state: 1,110 ft. Wintergreen also offers 14 trails and features two tubing parks. Bryce provides a very family-friendly atmosphere. The Homestead ski area offers both cross-country and alpine trails, but is perhaps best known for its posh accommodations and European-style spas.
There are also some scenic cross-country ski trails through Grayson Highlands State Park.
