Oregon has one of the most diverse landscapes of any state in the U.S. While scrublands, prairies and deserts cover around half the state, it is also well known for its coastline and, of course, its rugged, glaciated Cascade volcanoes. Among these is the tallest mountain in Oregon, Mt Hood, a stratovolcano rising 11,235 feet that is naturally very popular with skiers, hikers and climbers. The snow season in this area extends well into the summer and it is often even possible to ski and snowboard on Mt. Hood all year round!
The town of Hood River is particularly popular for board sports - it is a world famous destination for kiteboarding, and also has a very innovative skate park.
There are around a dozen alpine resorts in Oregon and many cross-country trails. Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tubing, and dogsledding are also very popular in the state.
Some of the steepest inclines to ski in Oregon include Timberline resort (vertical drop of 3,590 ft), Mt. Bachelor (vertical drop: 3365 ft.) and Mt. Hood resort (vertical drop: 2777 ft.).
