With its highest point just 472 metres (1,550 feet) above sea level, there's an inevitable gentleness to even the rockiest bits of Ohio's landscape.
However, its northern reaches - where the state borders with Lake Erie - fall within the US' snowbelt region and are subject to heavy snowfall during the winter months. And this makes for some good cross country skiing in Ohio. There are around eight official cross-country centres in the state, as well as a network of trails in several state parks.
Ohio also has six alpine ski resorts. With verticals in the range of 45 to 90 metres (150 to 300 feet), none of these have particuarly exhausting runs home, or much in the way of seriously challenging steep. But there are some interesting terrain parks here.
Alpine Valley has a half-pipe, in addition to all the usual tricks and boxes, while Mad River divides its park up into beginner, intermediate and advanced zones.
