For the second year in succession CairnGorm Mountain above Aviemore in Northern Scotland has been able to report figures of over 120,000 skiing and snowboarding visitors. It is over 15 years since the resort had two seasons in succession with numbers over 120,000. The 2010-11 season started early, on 13 November 2010 following the fortuitous decision to undertake the annual funicular maintenance over several evenings in June rather than throughout the month of November.

All five of Scotland’s ski areas are open today with Glencoe now open joining the other four. Most have a deep base, some with fresh snow and more snow forecast.
“Santa arrived early for Scotland’s ski areas,” said Chair of ski-scotland Heather Negus, “bringing us excellent snow to give us our best-ever early start to the ski season.

Three of Scotland’s five ski areas were open this weekend thanks in part to the low temperatures and the fresh snow that has fallen over the past few days.
Cairngorm had been open for several weekends already with limited unpisted terrain but it now offering a fully groomed run from top to bottom and has opened additional lifts as well as more terrain.
The two other Easterly ski areas, Glenshee and the Lecht also opened some terrain.

“We expected demand to be great for our 2011 all-area passes, given the superb snow which Scotland enjoyed over the last very long winter season”, said Chair of ski-scotland Heather Negus.

Cairngorm Mountain above Aviemore in Scotland has finally decided to call it a day on their 2009-10 ski season after opening in June for the first time in 18 years.
Although final figures are yet to be published, it appears winter 2009-10 will have been one of the area’s most successful for 20 years, with the lifts operating on around 150 days during the past eight months.

Glencoe, Scotland, March 19, 2009 - Scotland's original ski centre has been put on the market again
Scotland’s original ski centre has been put on the market again, reportedly in an attempt to find an investor who would look at funding a gondolas lift to replace the aged chair and make the centre more viable as a year round attraction.
The idea matches the successful route of Cairngorm at Aviemore and Nevis range near Fort William, both of which attract more summer than winter visitors with their funicular and gondola lifts.
