New Hampshire, like its neighbours Maine and Massachusetts, may not be the first place you'd think of for skiing or snowboarding in the US. However, winters up here in the north eastern corner of the US can be severe - especially in the mountains near New Hampshire's border with Canada - and there's plenty of the white stuff to go around.

Taking advantage of the conditions and the altitude, there are more than 20 downhill ski resorts in New Hampshire ranging from operations with a handful of lifts like The Balsams, to bigger resorts like Bretton Woods and Attitash, which have 500-odd metre verticals (1,650 feet) and over 70 runs.

The terrain in the state is best described as beginner-to-intermediate, with a good proportion of blue slopes in most resorts. If you're looking for steep, a couple of resorts like Gunstock, have a small number of double diamond runs.

You'll find terrain parks in more than half the resorts here, as well as extensive cross country trails at more than 30 centres across the state.
