While Nevada's most famous attraction - Las Vegas - is surrounded by desert, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the Lake Tahoe region in particular, boast the greatest concentration of ski resorts in North America.
Technically, the majority of the resorts in this area actually fall on the California side of the state line. But with resorts of this quality, who's really counting?
What the Nevada side has going for it - aside from the terrain and the powder - is convenience. The city of Reno is barely half an hour from the ski resorts, which means you've got an après ski scene that's not limited to the mountainside. Even Las Vegas has its 'own' resort - Lee Canyon - only 45 minutes from the strip.
Of the three resorts in the Tahoe area baring a Nevada zip code, Mount Rose is the highest and has the most advanced terrain. Diamond Peak is considered a great all round family resort. Heavenly - which can also be accessed from the other side of the border - has a mammoth vertical in excess of 1,000 metres (3,280 feet).
You can heli-ski in Nevada in the Ruby Mountains outside Elko.
