Squashed up against the Atlantic coastline, Maryland isn't in the ideal position to benefit from heaps of natural powder. However, with plenty of freshwater around and a reasonable altitude, conditions are good for snow making - and that's what the only ski resort in Maryland - Wisp - can do in abundance, if it needs to.
With a 215 metre (700 feet) vertical and a rash of blue runs carving up the side of Harsh Mountain, Wisp is ideally a beginner-to-intermediate resort. That said, there are a handful of black diamond runs, as well as a couple of parks and cross-country trails. Being the only resort, it can get crowded at weekends and conditions can be a little icy. But for east coast skiing or boarding, you could do a lot worse.
