It may be more famous for lobster fishing and shipbuilding than activities above the snow line, but Maine does nonetheless have a good number of ski resorts - 17 of the downhill variety, and a bunch more where you can go cross-country skiing.

A handful dominate with their scale. Sugarloaf and Sunday River both have in excess of 130 runs each and a whopping 860 metre (2820 feet) and 715 metre (2340 feet) vertical respectively. There's also the accommodation and styling here that you'd expect of a bigger resort, which makes these genuine holiday destinations rather than weekend breaks. Saddleback too has plenty of terrain.

Baker Mountain and Quoggy Jo represent the smaller end of the scale - with just five runs a piece and a couple of T-bars. But small doesn't have to mean limited. Night skiing, snow making, terrain parks and half pipes are common place in the majority of ski resorts in Maine.
