Eastern Europe
Countries
- Armenia - Limited skiing, but friendly folk and mountains all to yourself.
- Bulgaria - A country in transition, dollar-a-pint beer and skiing that won’t blow a hole in your wallet.
- Croatia - Small resorts worth considering if you’re staying in Zagreb and you’ve got a day or two in hand.
- Czech Republic - Weekend skiing within easy reach of Prague - the perfect city break with a little on the side.
- Estonia - Short runs on hills not far from the capital. Perfect for the, err ... less fit amongst us.
- Hungary - Not much in the way of down-hill, but an established cross-country scene.
- Latvia - Perfect conditions for cross-country fans - plenty of snowfall and wide open spaces.
- Macedonia - Less-than-perfect infrastructure but snow that lasts long into May.
- Poland - Infrastructure not quite on a par with the Alps, but decent established resorts with varied terrain.
- Romania - Awesome snowfall, cheap skiing and a season that lasts for ages.
- Russia - Still underdeveloped by Alpine standards but, as the venue for the 2014 winter Olympics, somewhere to keep an eye on.
- Slovakia - A bargain hunter’s dream, with plenty of small resorts in striking distance of Bratislava.
- Slovenia - A great choice for the cost-conscious skier or snowboarder - especially if you’re looking to consolidate on new skills.
- Ukraine - A good mix of terrain for most abilities if you don’t mind your corduroy a lil' bumpy.
